10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) – Personal Movie Review

image

After surviving a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men. Howard (John Goodman) tells her that a massive chemical attack has rendered the air unbreathable, and their only hope of survival is to remain inside. Despite the comforts of home, Howard’s controlling and menacing nature makes Michelle want to escape. After taking matters into her own hands, the young woman finally discovers the truth about the outside world. (c)

I will cut to the chase and give the movie an impressive 4 out of 5 stars for having a simple yet creative and thrilling plot and storyline. I love how the film makers tickled our imagination about the mystery it had and how they kept it that way for the majority of the movie. I felt a vibe of Ex-Machina until the last 10 minutes of the movie. I felt like the remainder of the film is another movie of its own and defeated the purpose of giving the audience some tension until the end of the flick. I will give them the benefit od the doubt as they wanted this movie to at least connect to the Cloverfield movie but it went from a very promising and solid movie to a botched open-ended one which it obviously screams sequel.

Other than the above, ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ was a smart and very engaging movie. It was a good combination of a grittiness/suspense, which took me to the edge of my seat, with a little touch of dark humor. The scoring and soundtrack that were perfect on each scenes and gave some boost to the overall feel of the movie. The cinematography was also neatly done and effective at the same time especially when it obviously pointed out to those claustrophobic. The cast’ riveting and realistic performances were outstanding.

You can still go watch it for its good entertainment value.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) – Personal Movie Review

image

Three years ago, I was dreaming of this day to come for me to feast my eyes with. The anticipation and expectations were very high since then and imagine how can the film makers and producers pull off high profile characters in one movie. Yes! higher than Marvel’s Avengers characters… let’s admit, Batman, Superman and Wonder Women are still the most iconic comic book characters of all time.

And then, the agony of waiting came to an end. I was able to see the movie immediately when it hit theatres and still having no qualms about the mixed reviews the movie had because I had hopes for this flick to really be awesome. I want this go down as one of the best comic book/superhero movie ever because, duh! It is Batman and Superman.

Enough said right? But NO! Because there are movies that instantly capture your attention and you can immediately tell you will enjoy the ride until the end. Batman v Superman didn’t have that aura. Let me explain, as much as I can, my thoughts on each factors.

PACING

The movie struggled to keep a balanced pacing. I understand this is a base story and movie for Warner Bros. & DC Comics Cinematic Universe (an obvious answer to MCU) and the are developing the arc ready for their upcoming Justice League live action adaptation but the first half of the movie is a bit dragging and slow. Then second half is were I get to enjoy the fast pace and adrenaline rush. They could havd gotten away with unnecessary scenes or at least made it better so that the pacing isn’t compromised.

SCENES, SEQUENCES, STORY

Is it me or the first half of the movie is chaotic. I feel they don’t know how to provide a good flow of the story. I think it is too predictable and was told in a simple manner. There is no consistency with its continuity of scenes and sequences as they are just like jumping from one scene to another. The moment the opening scene is being rolled, I had a feeling they will provide the audiences with rehashed stories we already know. I understand they need to include those scenes to further supplement the character and story development but because we already have tons of movies about Batman and Superman, they can at least give us some fresh take. What I like is the action and fight sequences between the two lead characters and the penultimate climax of the movie but it still lacks more of those scenes. I mean, I was expecting a big battle between Batman and Superman but I get that they want it to me more relatable and human in terms of Batman’s skills & his limit as well as Superman’s control to use his full powers against the dark knight.

REFERENCES, CAMEOS and EASTER EGGS

I love some references and easter eggs in the movie. One of it is Robin’s costume and how they use it to continue motivating Bruce to get rid of criminals in Gotham. I was salivating about the introduction and its cameo of fellow Justice League members like The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. Then you get to see some scenes directly coming from comic book itself (saw that pearl necklace scene) and of course, Dark Seid’s logo.

CASTING

I don’t know with you but I still think Henry Cavill is really good as Superman. His performance is still good and he pulled it off. For me, Henry Cavill is to Superman what Robert Downey Jr. is to Iron Man. Gal Gadot’s take as Wonder Woman is also spot on too. She was mysterious yet bas ass. Her fight scenes with Doomsday is one of the best scenes in the movie. Jessie Eisenberg as Lex Luthor for me is a good choice but not perfect for the role. His portrayal as a psychotic genius isn’t enough for me to be convinced that he is the villain the movie deserved. And lastly, Ben Affleck as Batman. For me he is a definitive Batman though I love Bale’s take on that Nolan’s trilogy. His portrayal as someone who has been hurt so many times in the past is really effective. I felt his sorrow and his urge to seek revenge or justice from all the traumas and hurt he had. I love the choice of having an older Batman for him to take as you get to see the more human side of his character.

CINEMATOGRAPHY, VISUAL EFFECTS & SCORING

Cinematography played a great part on building a darker, grittier tone for the flick but I felt that it became dry during the first half and is too dark for a PG 13 rated movie. I even felt a ‘300’ and ‘Watch Men’ -ish vibes in this movie. They also managed to use CGI and visual effects neatly but there are scenes were VFX isn’t realistic at all but I can forgive them for it. Although, they could’ve made Doomsday better… no justice for that. The scoring and soundtrack complimented the scenes especially when Wonder Woman appeared on screen. Man! That was one goosebumps moment.

———

All in all, I will rate the movie 2.7 out of 5 stars for being a let down simply because if you saw that one particular trailer, you can easily say that you have seen the entire film. It was boring at first but became entertaining and engaging for the rest of the movie. However, I like how Batman used a lot of combat skills, gadgets and vehicles (cool batmobile and batwing) as he should  supposed to be and do. The twist though is a bit of a cliffhanger. I still recommend you watching this  for three reasons. One, we get to see the Trinity of DC Comics in one movie. Second, this is part of our dream, as a comic book fan, to see a live action adaptation of this famous characters. Lastly, this will pave ways for stand alone JL character movies like Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman (I hope they will do justice with them) until the Justice League movie itself.

Watch: Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War – Trailer 2

image

Marvel and Disney has just dropped an epic and awesome new trailer for Captain America: Civil War and it is just jampacked with new clips with promising legit action sequences. The trailer guves more hints about what transpired the rift between the two and it is good to see that the tone of the film is a bit serious and dark. The scoring just perfectly blends into it.

Last time, the studio released a series of character posters for each team and it was obvious that Team Iron Man lacks one member (5 against 6 in favor of Team Cap) but this trailer already gives us (audiences and fans alike) the answer which we were looking for… yes! our friendly neighborhood Spiderman appeared and gives his side (I guess) to Team Iron Man. We also get to see great fight scenes including Blacm Panther chase, upgraded Iron Man suit and Spidey’s new costume which is more parallel to the comics.

Well, the trailer alone is interesting,  entertaining and you can really feel this movie will be the best Marvel movie ever. My anticipation level gets a higher notch and I can’t wait to see this coming May 2016.

Here is the new trailer and indulge yourself!!!

London Has Fallen (2016) – Personal Movie Review

image

London Has Fallen is a sequel to 2013 White House-under-siege movie, Olympus Has Fallen. Original lead casts of Aaron Eckhart, Gerard Butler, and Morgan Freeman reprise each roles.

Honestly, I have high hopes for this movie as the first movie did well & was a bit entertaining when compared to White House Down but it was a disappointing one. The plot was somehow very different from what was seen on the trailer and as always, the movie is full of clichés… typical of an action movie. The story line was a bit over the top to a point that it is no longer realistic. They could’ve made the plot simpler yet compelling and enticing to the audience. There are lots of situation and instances to play around and come up with a better script. There are times when the pacing was dragging & slow and at times fast especially during actions scenes which by the way is too much. It was also noticed that the CGI used for its VFX is not that polished and still feels fake. There are unnecessary scenes and could be helpful if they used those screen time for other frames which needs more character and story development.

I do understand the film makers want to inject some light moments but failed to hit the mark and felt Gerard Butler is trying hard delivering those lines. I thought this is his chance to redeem his reputation from that dismal of a movie called Gods of Egypt but it didn’t. The scoring though was nicely done and synched during action scenes which gave some thrill. The performances of the cast lack some energy to pull off their scenes effectively.

Lastly, I just hate the fact that since the first movie, this president is still annoying & useless and can’t defend his own life at times.

I will give this movie 1.5 out of 5 stars for having no entertainment value and consistency.

Gods of Egypt (2016) – Personal Movie Review

image

Mortal hero Bek teams with the god Horus in an alliance against Set, the merciless god of darkness who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. (c)

I sat for 2 hours and 10 minutes watching ‘Gods of Egypt’ (and by the way, the title is changed here in the Middle East and named it ‘Kings of Egypt’) and it made me realize I have wasted those hours of my life with this dismal of a movie. It is disappointing the film has a good, solid and promising plot to play around but they have missed the opportunity to improve it. There are at least major problems I have with this movie that I need to address other than some plot holes and inconsistencies. One is the white washing of the cast. I can’t understand why cast actors with no Egyptian or Arabic background or lineage for a film with such history & culture as a plot… they even have great English accent too! Secondly, the movie utilizes heavily on CGI as their visual FX to a point where the movie isn’t as realistic as possible. I bet the whole film was shot entirely at a big studio in Hollywood.

The producers and filmmakers are too ambitious and rely on the leads to carry the movie forward but it was not enough. The acting performances of the cast including the lead are all blant & insufficient and have tried to infuse some humor and comedic scenes which were ineffective and unnecessary. The scoring and soundtrack are also not appropriate to scenes as well. The pacing is slow and dragging that it became boring.

All in all, I will give this flick 1.2 out of 5 stars for being a big hyped movie with such low quality and entertainment value… at least the mythology is somehow correct in terms of god and goddess names.
