American Ultra (2015) – Personal Movie Review

I was anticipating for this movie since the past 2 months when I saw the trailer and thought the plot looked pretty cool. Though this seem to be another cliched movie, they seemed to give a good enough twist to keep me interested until the end. As per IMDb, Mike is a stoner – who is in fact a government agent – is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he’s too well-trained and too high for them to handle.

It is a likable movie and I enjoyed watching it especially with the perfect casting of Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. It is good to see that Stewart’s acting performance is better than her Twilight years but she was good with Still Alice though. Jesse’s really good at delivering long dialogues (I think it is his forte) and really lived up to his character, I mean both of them really slid down to their characters. Big name actors like John Leguizamo and Bill Pullman were wasted, casting director could have used other B-listers for their roles. I love how little did they do with the character development but it was enough to understand each of their background.

The setting is reminiscent to Scott Pilgrim movie less with the comic style visual effect. It is a good combination of comedy and gritty/dark action sequence. However, they could’ve gone into a Bourne Identity direction with a comedic twist but they fell short especially with the action scenes, they could’ve put in more action but darn the choreography of the action sequences is just brilliantly done, edited cleanly and its a no-holds bar goriness of a film.

I got some issues though with the pacing as it has its highs and lows with some scenes that were unnecessary. The plot is really predictable and the premise is very simple. I was supposed to think CIA is the bad ass government unit but they depicted a rather different one.

I will give the movie 3 out of 5 stars.
