Shingeki No Kyojin: Attack on Titan (Personal Movie Review)

The title and the gist of the film are based from a very popular anime/Manga and released this year, 2015.

The movie itself is very disappointing and an outright insult to the die hard fans of the anime/manga. I haven’t read the Manga but was able to keep track of the first season of the anime (still waiting for the 2nd season, darn it’s been long overdue!) and I know this movie should have been a tribute to all fans who supported and enjoyed watching the anime or reading the manga but the studio behind this is not even at least faithful to the anime or Manga’s plot, I don’t know if this is deliberate or not. I really don’t mind having a very heavy twist to its story but at least give justice to it and provide the audience the core elements from the anime. I can’t help but compare this to Rurouni Kenshin movie where they really brought life to the anime by being faithful to the storyline and the fans really enjoyed and loved the adaptation.

Every thing in the movie is rushed, there are scenes that aren’t necessary and it would be better if they incorporated some scenes which can further generate interest to the moviegoers. The pacing is just a roller coaster but mostly slow and dragging to a point that it became boring and sluggish. The editing was horribly done, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at a backstory/flashback or not and the visual was very messy and a let down. I mean, come on! We have seen a lot of Japanese movies with very cool CG’s but this movie was just handled poorly more like a college project but at the very least, the cinematography somehow helped set the tone of a community which was based on the anime itself. The climax was underwhelming and I was frustrated by the fact that they chose to end it that way.

I also don’t like the fact that the characters were not give a proper interpretation compared to the characters from the anime and they haven’t done any good character development to each of them. I can forgive the script writers for changing most of the plot but they could’ve at least given the same attitude and complexity of the characters to the film.

Anyway, I will give them 1.5 out of 5 stars for being a such a disappointment and didn’t live to the fans’ expectations.
